My Favourite Picture OF Carnival 2011

Well , this is something I don`t normally do but this time I could not help myself, of all the thousands of pictures we took and there where some Excellent entries especially this year, we as photographers were treated with absolute respect and where given access better than other years, for that we both Thank all the organisers and everyone who took part.

BUT! To me the best picture I took was the one below, I have no name,`s, they where both in the Taunton Carnival procession and I have entitled it “ME AND MY DADDY”

In all my years as a photographer I have never seen a more Happier smile of the little boys face and that includes Daddy.

If ANYONE knows who Daddy and His Son are Please let me know, so I can title it properly, it deserves their names as ALL I Can See Is Happiness, or if you know who Daddy and his Son are point them to this picture and tell them they can take it.

It is as I have said One of the Happiest Pictures I have ever taken.

A Glimpse Of The Taunton Christmas Festival

On Sunday the 20th November The Taunton Town Company put on a Spectacular for the people and visitors of Taunton the County Town Of Somerset. The whole day was just Spectacular, there was a fairground, lots of stalls to buy just about anything you needed and food stalls galore, even the shops stayed open.

On the Main Stage there were a lot of artists singing and quite a few bands, as a phtographer they did not do us any favours by having a black background to the stage which soaked up the light from our flashes.

The Highlight was the appearance of the Taunton Carnival Queen and Princess then Santa appeared on stage with his elves, the grand finale was a group of people as trapeze hung from a crane some 200 feet high, that was rather special, it was lowered and more artists where added, during this display the where fireworks and the Christmas Lights were switched on through the town

Bridgwater Carnival 2011 – PART 2

I have never done a part 2 before so this is a first, there where so many entrants in this years Bridgwater Carnival it has taken longer to process the images and I had to buy extra space to fit them all on and still I could not get some of the walking entries, for that I apologise. I did promise on young couple who were watching the Carnival a picture of their young boy who was waving his flag in his buggy but the flag got in the way of his face, that was a shame.

This years bridgwater was exceptional with more entries than I can remember, with no rain in the evening but the afternoon`s deluge was terrible. ALSO- as the Carnival was underway unknown to to the thousands of spectators and all those taking part just a couple of miles away there had bee an Horrific Accident on the M5 Motorway, it was a multi vehicle pile up and people lost their lives and many more were injured, what actually caused the accident as I write this is still under investigation.

For safety`s sake the organisers of the nearby North Petherton who where to have their Carnival the day after on 6 Nov were asked to Cancel it, as the Motorway would be closed that left just one road the A38 for everyone to visit and use in general. So The North Petherton Carnival did not go ahead as planned.

Bridgwater Carnival 2011

Well the weather was unkind to us at Bridgwater, BUT! only in the afternoon and WoW! did it rain, it continued with full on rain for about an hour, we got absolutely soaked and I mean SOAKED through to the skin. We went back to the car, heater on full and after around 90 minutes we were dry enough to put clean clothes on – YES we had brought some JUST IN CASE!

After a couple of cups of coffee and the rain had stopped we ventured out this was at 6.00pm the Carnival started at 7.00pm, the weather stayed fine and dry throughout the Carnival Procession, there are no official figures but I would estimate around 100,000 people lined the route through the town of Bridgwater and were very well entertained, there where over 100 floats and walking entries, it was Bridgwaters 406th Carnival Celebrating The Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot of 1604, for the people who don`t know that is what Carnival is all about, the fact that Guy Fawkes and his band of men failed to blow up the Houses Of Parliament and the then King James.

They were consequently ALL HANGED.

We came home with a total of 1,697 images, so it is going to take a while to sort through them, so the images will be posted sometime tomorrow Saturday 5 November, please bear with me as I intend to put up more than normal, but not all 1,697, WordPress would probably Crash.

Honiton Carnival – Devon-2011

Everyone was a little worried about the weather at Honiton for the Carnival Saturday 22 October 2011, they had every right to be as rain was forecast by the Met Office, the clouds were dark and heavy and half an hour before the start there where a few spots of rain but that was all. The rest of the night was clear and dry.

What an excellent Carnival that was organised by the Honiton Carnival Comittee, although I have to say after my absence from Honiton for a couple of years the spectators where allowed to sit on the edge of the road, to close for my likeing for safety, in my opinion, it look`s like an accident waiting to happen. But all went well and it was a Wonderful Parade, it was led off by Fusion Carnival Club a new Club [To Me] and I personally voted it the best at Taunton Carnival for enthusiasm by all who took part and it was, [in my opinion] the best at Honiton for, again the amount of enthusiasm that every member put into their entry, with the music of ELO-Mr Blue Sky.

Well Done to the organising Comittee and everyone who took part from all over South Devon and, to the public who turned out in their Tens of Thousands.

We will be back to Devon around Christmas time as they have I was well informed that they have some Wonderful Christmas Carnivals.

The Next Carnival To appear Here Will Be BRIDGWATER CARNIVAL which takes place on Friday 4th November. So after 6 weeks on the Carnival Trail We can have some time off.

Well I stuck my neck on the line saying it would NOT RAIN, thankfully it did not rain so my reputaion is still in tact, it was a wonderful Carnival at Taunton the County Town Of Somerset, it was the 46th Annual Carnival, the new starting point at Canal Road did not see any difficuties and everything went to plan.

The Carnival was led off by a couple of hundred Harley Davidson Motor Cycles, the whole procession spent 2 hours snaking around the town and arrived back at the starting point, giving us, as happens in Chard a second chance to see it all again except for the young children who found it a little to much, I saw a few being carried to the end point in their mothers arms asleep.

Well Done to the Taunton Carnival Committee for their excellent work and, to everyone who took part also the spectators who where there in the thousands to watch and support. That is the last of the South Somerset Federation of Carnivals. Next week 22nd October we will be visiting and photographing Honiton Carnival in Devon.

Chard Carnival – 2011

We arrived at Chard at 3.00pm, the day looked promising as the weather was holding out, we had a quick bite to eat and then went to look at the early float arrivals they looked promising also, so it was back to the starting point to watch everyone set up and have a chat to most people, well nearly everyone.

The Carnival started on time at 7.30pm, apart from the usual fire engine the Chard Majorettes led the whole procession off, the whole day was so well organised, so well done to the Chard Carnival Comittee also to the public who turned out in there thousands and, to all the Clubs that took part from near and far, it was a great night. One of the extras you get at Chard is when the procession has passed by you only have to wait for half an hour and they return to the starting point, so thats a second bite of the cherry and in all we came home with 934 pictures, obviously we cannot post them all but below is a good sample of the entries.

Second Carnival of the season was at Ilminster on a Glorious day, in the afternoon we had Wall To Wall sunshine as we had all week leading up to the Carnival and, is set to continue. There were many entrants as there always is at Ilminster with a Wonderful Atmosphere, Rascals Junior Carnival Club`s float had problems but that did not dampen anyone`s spirit from the club, they continued through the precession on foot, that`s Carnival-”The Show Must Go On”.

The entries as usual came from far and wide, from Devon, Wiltshire and Dorset. Well Done to everyone who took part entertaining the massive crowds of people who had travelled to see the Carnival Spectacle. People ask me if I have a favourite, the answer is NO, everyone puts a whole years work into producing their entry be it an illuminated float or a walking entry. I was surprised with one entry which was the Kelly Leigh School of Dance from Chard they had 50 young people in their group with an Excellent Dance Routine.

Well Done everyone and to the organisers who had everything under control.

The first Carnival of the 2011 season started at Wellington on 24 September at 7.30pm, the weather was excellent.

It seems, unfortunately, the entries get less each year, but as usual it never dampens the Carnival Spirit of all the people who take part and the turnout of spectators was at maximum for Wellington, in some places they were 5 deep, well done to every member of the public who turned out and, to all the Carnival Club`s who entered this year.

This the first Carnival of the South Somerset Circuit, the next will be at the town of Ilminster on Saturday 1st October, then onto the town of Chard on Saturday 8th October then onto Taunton the County Town on Saturday 15th October, unfortunately there will be no Carnival at Yeovil.

After Taunton we move to the North Somerset Circuit with the first being at Bridgwater know as the `Home Of Carnival` on Friday 4th November.

Wiveliscombe Street Fair – 11 Sept 2011

Wiveliscombe is a small town in West Somerset, every year the town hosts the Street Fair and Carnival, this year was no exception, there where more visitors than ever and more traders selling all, from food to arts and crafts. There where musicians of all types.

Being a part of the local community Radio Station – 10 Radio on 105.3 fm and streaming Live on the Internet 24 Hous a day, we turned up at 7.00AM to help put the Outside broadcast Truck together. At 9.00AM Lisa and myself went just down the road to the 10 radio studio, we waited for the signal to be received from the OB truck and we put it to `Air` and monitored the output. 10 Radio broadcast 8 hours that day without a hitch.

The small Carnival Started at 3.00PM and meandered through the streets, they were lots of entries and prizes, it is mainly for children but some adults join in as well. It was organised by a 10 Radio presenter Mark Blaker and the prizes where presented by another 10 radio Presenter Eddie Gaines.

All in All it was a great day, the Wiveliscombe Street Fair is the beginning of the “10 Parishes Festival” runs for a week until the 18 September. — Below you will find a few of the many photographs of the Street fair that I took on the 11 September.

A Walk Through The County Town – Taunton

Just recently we have had a walk through the County Town of Taunton in Somerset, something we have not done in a while as we have been busy doing our Radio Show but we thought we would take some time out and get some exercise , so we just wandered 12 miles down the road to the County Town of Taunton and get some pictures whilst we were there, also Lisa could try out her new camera.

My First 10 Radio Show

I mentioned my ambitions in life below, well this is the last ambition to be accomplished, we went on air at 14.00 until 16.00 Thursday 2nd June 2011 and will be in the same slot every week, the show is entitled “Heikoworlds Nostalgia Show”

Fot the first show all went well except for 2 small mistakes “Hey, It Was The First Show”, I got lots of help from Lisa, she had every page open in our running order on the i-pad and to make it even better the sun streamed in through the studio window.

So if your not in our area which we broadcast on 105.3FM you can go to www.10radio.org web page and click the tiny loudspeaker and we stream 24 hours a day around the world, oh and did we get lots of emails at studio@10radio.org.

All Ambitions Accomplished

At the age of 15 years old I set myself a list of Ambitions, not on a piece of paper but in my head, I think we all do it, we want to “Do This” or “We want To Do That”, my first ambition was I wanted to do well at school, well I got straight `A`s, I left school at 16 which was a dislike for me as I Loved it, well everyday your learning, I got an apprentiship as an electrician, at the age of 20 I passed all my exams and became an electrician, my family were more than pleased and at the end of all the many congratulations I told them “Now I Am Going To Get The Job I REALLY Want, they said, but you have a job as an electrician, I told them that was my back up plan, “I said “I want to work in Television as a cameraman” they could not believe it.

I applied at Granada Television in Manchester and got the job, ok at first I was a camera assistant, loading film and learning to pull focus, until the day came when I was given my first assignment, it was a news assignment in the City of Manchester asking men if they would use a man`s handbag, (thats the type men use a lot today). Each assignment led to another, I travelled all over the North Of England and then I was given the job making a Documentary, that was when I decided I did not want to do news items anymore, things got better and better, in 1970 I was asked by a family friend If I would like to move to the South of England, and be based and live in the County Of Somerset, Taunton, to be exact, I jumped at the chance as I knew it would enhance my career.

I had to get settled in Taunton as it was a whole new way of life and was given a job at the then (now gone forever) Taunton Cider Company, whilst there I made some short films for them and attracted the attention of the marketing department who said they knew people in Bristol at the HTV Television Company, (Now Incorporated Into ITV) I took the interview and got the job, back to news stories for a while and then into programmes and documentary`s. From then on I never looked back, in 1989 I became a Freelance Camerman, self employed, there I could use my time more freely, I took time out on some occasions to do some jobs that have always appealed to me, one of those jobs was making our local school “Courtfields Comprehensive School a Community School”at the end of the year I was succesful and the school is now officially a Community School, on another occasion a friend of mine who owned a large Coach company would I like to drive for them, yes please, I did that for six months and travelled all over the UK, I love driving and even more I love to meet people.

My list of ambitions is endless, I went back to my job as a television cameraman, I went to work in Germany and many other countries, I worked for all the major broadcasters including broadcasters abroad, Canada,USA,New Zealand, and many others. I don`t want to divulge into detail about what the content was but you will see IF you read the credit list`s on many documentaries and some films you will see my name there, not many people actually read the credits, if it was not for us you would not have the films you watch.

I have been a cameraman on live television especially cricket matches and Big Brother. but then it came to the year I was hoping would never arrive, “Retirement” it comes to us all in the end (given my age away now) I am still a photographer as you will see throughout this blog, but it has not ended yet. I had one thing left on my list, I had never worked in Radio.

I have now been given the chance to put that right, so on 2nd June 2011 I have my own Radio show on 10 Radio our local community radio station, from 14.00 to 16.00 every Thursday you can listen to me on the “Heikoworld Nostalgia Show”, locally it can be heard on 105.3 FM but go to www.10radio.org and you can hear us all streaming on the Internet all over the world.
